Appearing Alive: Revelation 3:1-3 Devotional

At first glance, the plant looks healthy.

Crisp leaves and dry flowers tell a different story when close up.

Early in the fall I added a beautiful plant to my collection. For years I had planned to buy one! At a market with my family, I saw it and just before leaving I purchased it! It is Mexican Heather. The grower and I selected a plant that had some flowers already open and more on the way. She showed me how to water it and demonstrated how the pot would help remind me.

When I got it home, I put it in decently sunny spot... A week later, I remembered it. I hoped it wasn’t too late. I tried to care for it but it was finished.

I thought about keeping the dead plant, but it didn’t make sense.

If I truly cared for the plant, I would have tended to it but instead I forgot about it.

Sometimes other things in our lives can be this way. We say we really want something, but we do not do the things necessary. I want to be healthy, but I don’t change how I eat, increase my activity, or choose good things to think about. I say I want to read more books so I buy them, but I sit in front of a device watching videos rather than reading. Worse is when I say I want to live for God, but it isn’t easy so I quit.

“To the angel of the church in Sardis write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

A Prayer

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for Who You are! Thank You for the new life you have provided for me! I am so sorry for not finishing what You have given me to do. Please help me to complete this course with joy.

Questions to Ponder

Where have you seen God reminding you of to persevere?

How will you aim to finish what God has assigned to you?
